The Jupiter Uranus Conjunction

We often use astrology as a way to prepare for the future. It is good for that, but astrology can also help us to understand ourselves and the events in our lives when we review our past. This is especially true when we consider cyclical transits: astrological events that happen on a regular schedule. We can look back at what was up for us “the last time this happened.”

We have such an event happening now. The Jupiter-Uranus conjunction will be exact on April 20th. Its influence began in mid-March and will run through May 25th, when Jupiter then leaves Taurus for Gemini (dates below). This is a transit that affects the collective. And it is cyclical, meaning that Jupiter and Uranus come together roughly every 14 years. They occupy different signs each time they come together, however, and will also occupy a different place in your birth chart each time.

We can learn what themes we might expect from upcoming transits by looking to the past. And if you happen to be born under this transit, you will be particularly sensitive to its energies.

I was born on a near-exact Jupiter-Uranus conjunction in July of 1969. We can look at the events during that time to get an idea of the expression of these two planets coming together. I was 12 days old when humans took our first steps on the moon. Jupiter is about expansion and risk, and Uranus is about innovation. Less than a month later, with Jupiter and Uranus still in a tight conjunction, came Woodstock. Jupiter magnifies what it touches, and Uranus symbolizes the archetype of the rebel. Rock stars were the gods of the moment, and the world watched as they took center stage.

In my own life, I’ve seen how the rebel archetype has been magnified. Take my choice of career, for example. It isn’t exactly traditional. Being an astrologer and a freelancer, I find myself continually rebelling against the prevailing wisdom about what astrology is (and isn’t). (Uranus is a ruler of my career house, to boot!)

The last time this transit happened in 2010-2011, the conjunction was in late Pisces to early Aries, and opposed my natal Jupiter-Uranus conjunction. My life went through a major upheaval. My Dad had a massive stroke, and I stepped in to manage his care—indeed, to manage his entire life. During the same time, I got my first full-length article published in The Mountain Astrologer and began working as an assistant editor for them. To be published in TMA was huge for me, and to be a working editor was the fulfillment of a dream. It was a time of great losses mixed in with huge opportunities. To call it a “mixed bag” would be an understatement.

I have learned from experience that with any transit, it is never all good or all bad. As I prepare for this transit, I’m watching for the opportunities. But I’m also prepared for Uranus, bringer of change, to disrupt certain aspects of my life that are ready to be disrupted. And Jupiter may invite me to take uncomfortable risks.

My hope is that since the current conjunction is not in such a dramatic place in my personal chart this time, it will go a titch more lightly on me! lol.

Here are the themes of the current transit so that you can apply it to your own life.

Jupiter keywords: Expansion, Optimism, Luck, Optimism

Jupiter in Taurus emphasizes financial growth through patience and practical steps. It is a time to focus on long-term investments, saving, and building a solid financial foundation. Conversely, the shadow expression of Jupiter in Taurus is over-indulgence and impulsive spending. So we have been invited during this time of Jupiter in Taurus to cultivate habits of discipline and perseverance.

This placement also reminds us of the importance of taking care of our health. It is a time to prioritize self-care practices, such as exercise, healthy eating, and sufficient rest. We are supported in improving our relationship to our bodies overall.

Uranus keywords: Innovation, Breakthroughs, Rebellion, Unexpected Twists

Uranus in Taurus is a wake-up call for a more conscious and sustainable relationship with the material world. It's a time to embrace change, innovate, and re-evaluate what truly matters to us. Uranus' transit through Taurus from May 2018 to April 2026 is shaking up our relationship with finances, values, and comfort. The shadow expression of Uranus in Taurus is a stubborn resistance to change. During this time we are being encouraged to re-evaluate our financial systems, question true security, and embrace a more mindful approach to possessions.

Uranus in Taurus is also pushing us out of our comfort zones, forcing us to adapt to changes in careers, homes, or the physical world. Ultimately, Uranus in Taurus is a wake-up call for a more conscious and sustainable relationship with the material world.

When you bring them together: Jupiter wants to build on the familiar, Uranus wants to break it apart. This combo is volatile but powerful for progress when harnessed well.

Tips for Navigating the Energy

  • Be Adaptable: This isn't the time for rigid financial plans or clinging to the way things "should" be.

  • Balanced Risk: Be open to new opportunities, but don't jump in blind – due diligence is KEY under this aspect.

  • Reassess Values: What's truly essential? Separate needs from wants. This preps you for change and helps find deeper stability.

And to gain additional insight into how the current transit may show up for you, here are some prompts:

  • Think back to 2010-early 2011. Do you remember what was going on for you then? Jot down whatever events come to mind.

  • Do you see a theme connecting the events?

  • Do you remember how you felt during that time?

  • Can you see now what you learned then?
